in this article, we will be discussing the most commonly spoken/heard misconceptions surrounding PTSD. it’s so important to be informed and address these misconceptions head on!
“People with PTSD are weak”
PTSD warriors have undergone such tragic events, and PTSD is a result of the brain's natural response to trauma. not to mention, help for PTSD is a sign of strength, not weakness. vulnerability is extremely powerful (and that goes to non-PTSD warriors as well)!
“PTSD is incurable and those with the condition will never recover”
so many people with PTSD experience significant improvement with the right type of treatments. in fact, the World Health Organization states that 40% recover within a year!
“Therapy makes it worse, because talking about trauma makes it worse”
by talking to someone about one’s feelings, whether it’s a support group or one on one therapy, can alleviate the burden of carrying those feelings on your own. opening up can help process the traumatic event a PTSD warrior underwent too, even if it’s not with a professional. it’s so impractical to be a shoulder for those with PTSD (if you are comfortable).
“People with PTSD are violent”
most PTSD warriors are not violent, rather, that’s a stereotype the media likes to perpetuate in movies or on social media. it’s actually more likely for PTSD warriors to harm themselves than others.
“PTSD is a veteran thing”
anyone that has undergone trauma can experience PTSD symptoms, and that includes veterans but is not exclusive to them only. it’s important not to invalidate anyone’s experiences, not assume, and always choose kindness.
