what are the causes of dissociative identity disorder? by jelani

why does dissociative identity disorder (DID) happen? it is not always a simple answer. many people with DID, they have experienced very hard events — big traumas, painful memories. sometimes, when a young child is facing very difficult things, their mind is trying to protect. it is like the mind cannot handle too much hurt, so it hides some memories and makes them feel far away. this way, the child can survive. over time, this separating of memories can grow into different “parts” or identities.

when the pain is strong, the brain is trying to make a safe place for different parts. each part, can be different — one might be child, another strong protector, or someone who feels no fear. and these parts, they can live different pieces of the person’s life. some parts remember what others do not. sometimes, persons with DID is not knowing why they feel different in one moment and different again later.

it is not only “big events” that cause DID. sometimes, it is many small things happening over time. the brain finds a way to cope, to make these parts. but not everyone facing difficult times will get DID, of course. it is not same for everyone. why DID happens for some and not for others — it is something even doctors cannot fully say.

in the end, DID is not someone’s fault. it is the mind’s way to keep safe. people with DID, they are finding their way, learning their parts. this is the journey they are on — and with help, many people find a way to peace with their parts!
