PTSD has so many causes, and these causes are always specific to the person and their experiences; it is important to know that we cannot list all of those specific causes, and that regardless of whether those causes are listed in this article, we shouldn’t invalidate someone’s trauma. PTSD usually develops after someone experiences or witnesses a traumatic, life-threatening event. to give some examples: exposure to combat, sexual assault, natural disasters, or other harrowing situations that shatter one's sense of safety and well-being. the sudden loss of a loved one can also trigger PTSD, and so can a history of childhood abuse and/or neglect, which can seriously impact a person's emotional and psychological development.
these types of experiences can lead to intrusive thoughts, nightmares, hypervigilance, and a debilitating sense of fear — all of which are hallmarks' of PTSD. this is why it’s so important to be aware of others, and choose kindness even when it’s not asked of you. you never know what someone has gone through.
